Gum Recession

Gum recession occurs when the gums wear away or tear away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria thrive, one of many gum disease symptoms. (Additional gum disease symptoms include loose teeth, bad breath, bleeding gums or swollen gums.)

Gum recession is serious and can negatively affect your overall health because your gums are directly connected to your bloodstream. Unlike most other cellular parts of your body, gums do not grow back. However, they can heal. Surgical procedures are recommended for revival.

If you have receding gums or think you may have any of the other gum disease symptoms mentioned above, contact Dr. Frank P. Bruno’s office today to schedule an appointment.

Causes

Many different factors can cause gum recession. In fact, some people are simply genetically more prone to it. One of the most common causes of gum recession is periodontal disease (gum disease), which is mainly caused by improper oral hygiene. For a healthy mouth and body, proper in-home care and regular dental visits are crucial.

Other causes of gum recession can include:

• Grinding or clenching of the teeth, also known as bruxism, which can create extreme pressure that shifts teeth and gums.
• Misaligned teeth can create uneven pressure, also possibly shifting teeth and gums.
• Improper brushing techniques or tools can affect gum health. (Dr. Bruno will gladly teach you the best techniques and recommend the best tools.)
• Hormonal changes (like pregnancy) can make the gums more sensitive, which can lead to issues like gum recession and/or gum disease.
• Oral piercings are strongly discouraged. In a very short period of time, they can break down the structure of the gums through consistent rubbing and bumping.
• Tobacco use weakens the immune system and breaks down the good bacteria in your mouth, leaving you with little defense against infection/disease.
