Dental Implant Consultation

What to Expect During Your Consultation

Examination
Your dentist will perform a thorough examination of your teeth and gums in addition to assessing your bone density. Patients with inadequate bone density may require a bone grafting procedure prior to placing the implants.

X-rays
Your examination may involve X-rays and computer tomography scans (CT scans). The dentist will use the X-rays to determine the exact placement location for the implants.

Discussion
Your dentist or periodontist will question you about your oral hygiene routine, medical/oral health history, and personal habits that may influence the success of the implant procedure. Smoking, for example, may disqualify a patient, because tobacco use can negatively affect the successful integration of implants.

Understanding Your Implant Options
Based on the results of the examination, your doctor will recommend which type(s) of dental implant procedures are best suited for your unique oral healthcare needs. Although dental professionals began using implants over two decades ago, implant dentistry is constantly evolving and improving. Unlike dentures and fixed bridges, implants are highly versatile; they can adapt to the needs of the individual patient and be used to replace a single tooth, multiple missing teeth, or all of your teeth. Today’s patients also have numerous implant treatment options to choose from, including traditional implants, All-on-4 implants, implant supported dentures, and more. Your doctor will explain what each procedure entails and clarify the differences between them.

Other Questions
During the consultation, your doctor will describe the steps involved in your individual dental implant treatment plan. Some questions that may be addressed include the following:

• How long will the treatment last from start to finish?
• How many appointments are required?
• How long is the recovery period?
• What happens after the surgery? What immediate aftercare regimen do I need to follow?
• How do I care for my dental implants?
• What are my options for local anesthesia? Can you substitute sedation dentistry if necessary?
• What factors influence the overall cost of dental implants?
• Does my insurance cover implant procedures?
